Mumbai – a top thali in Kalbadevi

Moving up the Mumbai peninsula, just to the north west from Fort, the next downtown district is Kalbadevi. This would be a good place for lunch after you’ve walked around nearby Crawford Market.

My Google map is here.

Shree Thaker Bhojanalay (High Elementary A), Building No. 31, Dadiseth Agiyari Lane, Kalbadevi Road, Marine Lines East, Gaiwadi, Kalbadevi

This is one of Mumbai’s oldest restaurants, founded in 1945. According to the signs in their waiting area, they have won the prestigious Times Food Award for the best Gujarati Thali restaurant every year between 2006 and 2014.

My friends Vishaal and Jiji brought me here in 2017. As local foodies they know where to get the good stuff so I was very happy to be in their hands.

I’ve rarely had such a comprehensive thali experience, the delicious vegetarian food just keeps coming at you until you finally surrender and have to give up!

We had even more dishes than are pictured on this tray!

Three different kinds of rice (steamed, kedgeree and pilau) were also offered. Apparently the menu changes every day.

A great food experience that I strongly recommend. Thanks guys!
