Launceston is Tasmania’s second city. It seems to have retained more heritage buildings than the capital. These were just a few of my favourites that I snapped in a couple of hours of walking around. Due to lack of time I’ve just roughly grouped them into general styles. Don’t hammer me, I’m not an expert! If you want to know more, this page will help you.
As with most Australian cities there are plenty of Victorian residences with typical wrought iron detailing.

Launceston Post Office is Federation Queen Anne style. It’s one of the few buildings where I could get a good look inside.

Art Nouveau

The Cornwall Hotel is one of the town’s oldest buildings, dating from 1823. Later additions include an Edwardian (Federation) facade with an Art Nouveau parapet and perhaps later circular Deco windows?

And some Neoclassical?

Art Deco

There are heaps of churches. These two were my favourites.

I stayed at the three star Hotel Colonial www.coloniallaunceston.com.au The rooms round the back are in modern blocks but the old building at the front dates from 1847. The breakfast room is lovely.

Next, the best restaurant in Launceston!
