Tasmania – a brief visit to Sheffield

While I was up in the north-west of Tasmania, I couldn’t resist visiting Sheffield, the namesake of my hometown back in the UK.

Of course the two places are very different! Sheffield in the UK is a post-industrial metropolis of 600,000 people while Sheffield in Tassie has a population of 1,600 and an economy based principally on dairy farming. They do have some institutions in common though.

This Sheffield is pretty much a one street town.

However the locals have tried to make it more attractive to visitors by inviting artists to paint murals around the town, mostly about rural life…

… local nature scenes…

… or how the town used to be in the past.

And there is one shop everyone should definitely visit, Doktor MoJo at 39 Main St which is run by an absolute character! It sells vinyl, second hand books, antiques and many other bizarre and wonderful things. A must visit.

I stayed at the Sheffield Hotel sheffieldhoteltasmania.com, an old Victorian pub where the rooms start at around £35 a night.

And I ate at T’s Chinese Restaurant www.tsrestaurant.com.au at 85 Main St which gets a mention in Where Chef’s Eat, an Australian publication with restaurant reccomendations from chefs.

I fancied a change so I gave their dumplings (what they’re recommended for in WCE), Xujiang chillie chicken and fried rice a whirl but I felt it was all pretty mediocre. Their waiter was quite fun though (click on the video).

Try the RSL club instead.

Food on the road next…
